9 Hard Truths About CEO Productivity

1.

We all need a balance between mind / body / soul.

Look at your calendar. Do you have things planned that make you healthier, happier and smarter? If not, what can you schedule?

2.

The concept of “zone of genius” is great, but sometimes unrealistic (especially at early stage).

If you don’t have anyone to delegate important responsibilities to, find a way to produce the 80/20 answer until you are able to bring in the right person.

3.

Chasing the latest productivity hack is a red flag.

Highly effective people create and optimize systems, they don’t rely on the latest shiny thing. They become an execution machine or bring someone on board who can do it for them.

4.

If you have ADHD tendencies, this is even more important.

If you use a hack for 2 weeks, then move onto the next, and so on, you start to feel increasingly inadequate to get things done. What system can you commit to and stay consistent with? Less is more.

5.

We all need time for deep work to get into our flow.

80% of your impact comes from 20% of your time. Pick the time of the day when your brain is at its best and protect those 2-3 hours, every day. Phone on airplane mode.

6.

Context switching can be a blessing or a curse depending on your cognitive type.

For people with ADHD tendencies, the name of the game is dopamine management throughout the day. For them, context switching is great. For others, avoid it at all cost.

7.

Relying on a ToDo list only is one of the worst things you can do to your productivity.

It either creates a sense of fake productivity (you can be productive on the unimportant things) and / or a sense of incompetency “Here are all the things I couldn’t get done today. Again”.

8.

Working ON your business is as important as working IN your business.

Schedule a weekly check-in (Mon) to review the 3Ps: Progress, Problems, Priorities with your team and then a solo Planning time (Fri or over the weekend). This is when you work ON your business.

9.

The weekly Planning ritual is what makes the difference between efficient vs effective.

Spend 30mins each Fri / weekend looking at your calendar and ToDo-s and ask yourself:

  • What is the most impactful thing I can accomplish next week in order to achieve my goals?

  • Am I working on the $10 problems or the $1M problems? (hint: aim for the $1M ones)

  • How can I delegate / pause / limit the rest?

Apply The 80/20 Rule Like a CEO

If you think like a CEO, you become brutally intentional with your time and energy. Pareto’s law says: 80% of outcomes (or outputs) result from 20% of all causes (or inputs) for any given event. Here
